Discover the Sights and Sounds of Rio de Janeiro

110928195There is a reason Rio de Janeiro recently played host to the World Cup and the Summer Olympics, and why it is one of the most visited cities in the world, which is why you need to plan your next vacation there! People come from all over to see the bustling city, vibrant culture, and beautiful scenery. Now it’s your turn to see firsthand what all the fuss is about. Or if you are fortunate enough, visit during Carnival and learn how to party.

Rio de Janeiro is known for many things, but one thing in particular is its exotic culture. Walk along the beach, have cocktails such at cachacas or caipirinhas, taste some real Brazilian cuisine such as feijoada, or go dancing at one of the many night clubs, no matter what you decide you want to do, you will be surrounded by bright colors, tropical atmosphere, and beautiful people.

For those that don’t remember, earlier this year we wrote a blog, “The Top 5 Places to Visit in 2016.” Number one on that list was Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!

Copacabana Beach

473089840Copacabana beach is one of the world’s most famous beaches. Whether you are looking to relax and lounge on the white sand, take a dip in the clear blue water, play volleyball on the beach, or sit along the Copacabana promenade and people watch, this beach has something for you. There are also two forts at each end of the beach, Fort Copacabana on the south end, and Fort Duque de Caxias on the north end for those who are interested in doing some exploring. The beach is lined with hotels, restaurants, bars, and night clubs, and is one of the many tourist hot spots that Rio has to offer.

Tijuca Forest

166638316Tijuca Forest is a large tropical rainforest in the heart of Rio. The forest covers about 12 square miles and is a great place to go on a hike and see some tropical wildlife. The land of Tijuca Forest had previously been cleared to grow sugar and coffee, however in the second half of the 19th century a replanting effort was carried out by Major Manuel Gomes Archer. Today it is a National Park and home to several attractions including Christ the Redeemer.

Christ the Redeemer

534215078Christ the Redeemer is arguably the most recognized landmark of Rio de Janeiro. The statue of Jesus Christ sits atop Corcovado Mountain and overlooks the city of Rio. It stands 98 feet tall, not including its 26-foot pedestal, and its arms stretch 92 feet wide. The statue is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and was constructed between 1922 and 1931. Christ the Redeemer is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Sugarloaf Mountain

156301533One of the interesting pieces of natural scenery in Rio de Janeiro is Sugarloaf Mountain. Sugarloaf Mountain is a peak that stand 1,299 feet tall and is situated at the mouth of Guanabara Bay. The name of the mountain was coined after it’s resemblance to the traditional shape of refined loaf sugar. However, what makes Sugarloaf Mountain a top attraction is the cableway that runs up to the mountain. Riding a glass walled cable car will let you capture a breathtaking panoramic view of Rio.

Santa Teresa

A trip to Rio de Janeiro isn’t complete without visiting Santa Teresa. The neighborhood of Santa Teresa is famous for its art. Take a stroll down the narrow winding roads and stop at art studios and galleries. Another popular attraction is the Santa Teresa Tram which crosses the Carioca Aqueduct and offers great downhill views of the city.
