activeDo you ever find yourself too busy to exercise? Is working a full time job making it difficult for you to find the time to stay active? Trying to find time for yourself, or time to work out can be quite a challenge when working full time. After all, spending the majority of your day at work and battling rush hour can take a lot of energy. Yet, there still is no excuse for taking care of yourself. Living a healthy lifestyle is important, and sometimes it can feel like work gets in the way of that. So if you find yourself willing to try something new in order to stay active while working full time, follow some of these great tips!

1. Get Up Early Waking up early can be a drag if you aren't a morning person. Hitting the "snooze" button is almost unavoidable. While it may take some will power and extra motivation, getting up earlier to work out can have an amazing impact on your day. For one, exercising in the morning is a great way to start the day, get your blood pumping, and give you that feeling like you are ready to take on the world. You will even find that by working out in the morning that you may be sharper throughout the day.

2. Ride Your Bike or Walk to Work One fun way to try and stay active is to walk or ride your bike to work. While this option may not work for everyone, those that live in close proximity to their job should give it a try. Enjoy the scenery, get some fresh air, and have some time to clear your mind before starting your day at the office. The best part is that you will be saving money on gas!

3. Take Periodic Walks While on the job, you want to be productive as you possibly can. So taking a long walk might be a bad idea. However, try breaking that long walk into shorter ones throughout the entire day. Use a bathroom break to walk around the building for a few minutes. Doing this every couple of hours will add up, and by the end of the day you might be surprised how much you have walked. Try wearing a pedometer to help keep track of your steps and help you reach any daily goals you might have.

4. Join a Gym Close to Work If you work close to a gym, consider getting a gym membership there. You can go for a work out on the way in or just after you get off. Waiting until you get home to exercise is another option, but after having along day on the job and having to battle through rush hour can leave you feeling exhausted by the time you get home.

5. Use Your Lunch Break Going on your lunch break is one of everyone's favorite parts of the day. If you plan on eating at nearby restaurant or are picking up food to take back, try walking instead of driving. Or if you joined a nearby gym, try going there during your lunch break to save time. Just be sure to shower before heading back to the office, no one wants to sit next to the sweaty person.

5 Tips for Staying Fit and Active While Working Full Time

benefitsWhen looking for a job, many people put just as much importance on the benefits the job offers as they do on salary. This is because sometimes those benefits help increase the amount of our salary we can take home, by saving money on health insurance or not having to purchase as much life insurance. People like to feel taken care of, and working at a company that offers great benefits can create a loyal workforce. However, there are still things people need to consider when it comes to their insurance benefits.

Health Insurance

In most cases, if you could have a choice between individual health insurance and group health insurance, you should choose group health insurance. One reason is being part of a group plan offered through your employer may be less expensive for you than purchasing your own individual plan. That is because your employer is required contribute at least 50% towards your premium. Also, you should note that networks for group plans are much larger than networks for individual plans. One thing to be aware of when using a company sponsored health insurance plan is that you may lose insurance coverage if you lose your job. There are options that can allow you to keep your coverage, but it will be more expensive. For more read our blog, “Recently Laid Off: What are My Insurance Options?” Something else to be aware of is that your group plan may not be able to be customized to fit your needs.

Life Insurance

There are some companies who will offer their employees life insurance coverage as a benefit. Typically the policy has a low face value. $10,000 and $15,000 are common. Some may think that they don’t need to purchase their own life insurance policy because it is offered through their work, however, you still should have your own policy for several different reasons. One reason is if you were to ever leave your current job, you would lose that life insurance policy. If you have people that depend on you, having your own life insurance could be just what your family needs. Even if you happen to stay at your job, the policy may be too low, and may not cover all of your needs and debts if something were to happen to you prematurely. For more information about different kinds of life insurance, read our blog, “What are My Life Insurance Options?”

Disability Insurance

Disability insurance is a great way for your employer to give you and your family the coverage you need in the event you develop an illness or sustain and injury and are unable to work. It’s important to know whether your employer offers a short-term or long-term disability insurance plan. If your company offers short-term disability insurance, you may want to think about purchasing a long-term disability insurance plan in case you are unable to work for two or more years. If your company offers long-term disability insurance, you may want to think about purchasing a short-term disability insurance plan to give yourself coverage until the long term coverage kicks in.

For more information about why it may make sense to have a disability insurance plan, read our previous blog, “What are the Benefits of Having a Disability Plan?” Our insurance specialists have the knowledge and experience to assist and guide you, your family, or group to the best coverage for your budget. What You Need to Know About Company Sponsored Insurance Benefits

life insurance claimLosing a loved one is a reality that we all dread. No one wants to get that phone call that forces them to begin the grieving process. With so many things crossing your mind, the last thing you may want to be thinking about is what the next step is in order to receive a death benefit from the deceased’s life insurance. Yet, there is a process you must go through to attain the payout which may help you when it comes to funeral costs, paying the bills, or putting money away for the kids.

Where Do I Start?

Locate the policy for specific information about who to contact. It’s a good idea to keep the policies in a place that is easy to find. Once located, contact the insurance company and they should assign an agent to assist you through the steps you need to take in order to submit the claim. If life insurance was provided as a benefit from his or her employer, then contact the employer for the information. The policy will also tell you how much you can expect to be paid.

What Information Will I Need?

You will need to obtain the death certificate as well as any other necessary documents. All documents must be originals or notarized copies. Once all the paperwork is filled out and the documents are sent in, the insurance company will begin to process your claim.

How Long Can it Take to Process?

Generally, the processing time is quick. Companies want to help those in need as quickly as they can. However, if any of the forms are not filled out correctly or the documentation is wrong, the claims process can turn into a lengthy one.

Are There Different Collection Options?

There are different ways to collect the benefit. You can receive it in a lump sum, receive it in installments, or leave it to collect interest. Keep in mind that all payouts will be tax free. So if you are trying to avoid paying higher taxes by not selecting to receive the payout in a lump sum, it’s not necessary because you will receive the entire amount.

Can My Claim Be Denied?

If the insurance company discovers that you were withholding information about a medical condition, there is a good chance your claim will be denied. That’s why it is crucial for you to disclose all information when buying the policy. Also, the insurance company can deny your claim based on the manner of death by the insured. Policies have a list of scenarios that will explain what can get your claim denied, so read the policy and follow directions! If you suspect that the deceased had a life insurance policy, but are unsure, contact the American Council of Life Insurance (ACLI). For a fee, they will investigate and try to locate the policy.

Did you know there is a type of life insurance that allows to borrow money from the policy? For more information, be sure to read our previous blog, “Can I Borrow against My Life Insurance Policy?” If you are interested in purchasing life insurance, or have any questions about your policy, or which policy would be best for you and your family, contact us at 954-828-1819 or visit us online at mhginsurance.com. We have the insurance specialists to assist and advise you on the best coverage for you and your loved ones at every stage of life.

How to File a Life Insurance Claim

newlywed“If there are any objections, speak now or forever hold your peace.” “Wait they don’t have life insurance!” Hopefully you don’t find yourself in this situation, and you already have a good life insurance policy in place. However, if you don’t have life insurance, it’s something you need to start thinking about it.  After the honeymoon of course! Who knows, maybe you will say I do again... to life insurance. See what I did there?

Protect Your Spouse

Unfortunately, death is a part of life that we all have to experience and plan for. Not all marriages are like “The Notebook” where you and your partner live into your golden years and pass away together in each other’s arms. Life insurance is designed with your loved ones in mind and plays an important role in your overall financial planning. If you have anyone depending upon you financially, you probably need Life Insurance even if you are young and healthy. For most, this financial responsibility begins when they either get married or have a baby. Have you thought how your family, or those you care about, would manage without you financially? The grieving process is hard enough, don’t let your better half also have to worry about how they will pay the bills or be able to afford the mortgage. In the event of your untimely death, you want to be reassured that your husband or wife will be financially secure in the event of your passing.

Invest in Your Future Together

Did you know that life insurance has other benefits besides providing a benefit to your beneficiaries? Certain policies such as a Whole Life policy can act as a way to save and invest money. In most cases, a Whole Life policy has a “cash value” that is invested and can earn as high as 5% interest. The cash value is calculated based on how much money you have paid so far in premiums, and after a certain amount of time, your cash value could be worth more than you have paid! Also, with a Whole Life policy, after a certain amount of time, you can cancel the policy and get back all of the money you have paid so far, and then some!

Lower Premium

Getting married, buying a house and having baby are life events that prompt us to buy life insurance but it’s really something you should be considering even if you have no assets or dependents. Did you know that in most life insurance policies, you have the same monthly premium for the duration of the policy? That means if you’re paying $50 a month, you will be paying the same amount for the life of the policy. Unless you increase your coverage, you are locked in to a set premium. This is important because as you get older, policies become more expensive. Typically, you can expect your premium to double every 10 years. Good enough reason to stop putting off purchasing a life insurance plan, right?

What Newlyweds Need to Know About Life Insurance

college graduateGet your caps and gowns ready because graduation season is in full swing across the country! Soon, hundreds of thousands of young adults will be looking to start their first job which will hopefully lead to a long and successful career. However, if you haven’t heard, the job market is tough out there, and in many cases, there are more candidates than available jobs. This makes for an increasingly competitive job market, with potential prospects doing whatever they can to get a competitive edge, or get one up on the competition. As an employer it can be quite overwhelming if you’re looking to fill new positions with fresh talent. In many cases, you may be bombarded with potential candidates, some of which may not even have the skills or requirements that you are looking for. However, if you’re lucky, you may find multiple, qualified candidates. If you find yourself in this situation, it can be hard selecting just one. Keep these tips in mind in order to not only find a candidate who is qualified, but also one who will be a perfect fit within your company.

Make Your Expectations Very Clear

It is very likely that the candidate you are interviewing is not familiar with some of the industry jargon that you use around the office. It is important to be very clear with your expectations, job descriptions, and qualification requirements. Try to avoid using general statements and broad descriptions. For example, instead of saying this job requires good communication skills, be specific on how and what they need to be good at communicating such as, the ability to communicate orally and verbally to a large group.

Do They Know What They Want to Do?

Many young adults aren’t quite sure what they want to do with their life, even after graduation. While this is perfectly normal, try to hire a candidate who knows exactly what they want to do. Someone who may still be figuring out what they want to do with their life, may discover that they do not like what they are doing, which can lead to having to hire and retrain someone which can be a waste of time and money.

Passion Can’t Be Taught

While experience is very important, there is no class that teaches passion! A passionate worker often leads to a dedicated worker. It’s always good to have someone who takes pride in their work, and someone who truly wants to be successful around the office. Hopefully they’ll rub off on others too!

Help Them Succeed!

Keep in mind that if you are hiring someone fresh out of university, there is a very good chance that this will be their first “grown up job.” Expect some mistakes to be made along the way. This is your chance to teach good habits and mold them into a strong, successful worker you want them to be. After all, the more successful they become, the better you look, and the more successful your company will be.

Try an Internship

Sometimes, no matter how extensive the hiring process is, you can find that later down the road that the person you thought was a perfect fit, is actually the complete opposite. To help avoid this situation, use a “trial run” to make sure the prospect isn’t “too good to be true.” Internships can often help in this area. Not only is it non-committal, but also leaves you in control. If during the internship they prove themselves to be a perfect fit to your culture, you have the opportunity to offer them a permanent position!

Finding new employees to join your team can be an arduous task, but a good workforce is critical to a company’s success, and it all starts with the people you hire. Once they’re hired, keep them happy and dedicated by offering great benefits! Whether you are buying group health insurance for the first time or looking for an alternative to your current plan, the Insurance Specialists at MHG are happy to help! Hiring the Best College Graduates

adviceAs insurance brokers we are here to help! Part of that assistance is our expert advice that we provide. So we thought it would be a great idea to ask our employees, “What is one piece of advice you would give your clients?”

Mark Bononi- Director, Luxury Yacht Division

Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. Typically, health insurance that has a lower cost will not have the same amount of coverage as one that costs more. If you are looking for health insurance that fits you best but you have a budget, seek advice from someone who knows what they’re talking about, and is experienced on the matter.

Edward “Mole” Telfer- Director, Cruise Division

Providing a solid employee benefits package can be the key to attracting and retaining the industry’s best employees. Use a “Rolling Benefits Strategy” to build up your benefits over time.

Janine Jeffries- Director, Business Insurance Division

Give your agent a complete picture of the business and description of operations. Each business has unique attributes. The more your broker knows, or has a better understanding, the better we can do our job. Also, be sure to ask questions. You would be surprised how many needs are uncovered during a Q&A session with your broker.

Stephen Beck- Manager, Life & Health Division

I would advise our clients to not WORRY about “What if?” but to ASK about the cost of insuring themselves against each “What if?” that concerns them. Just ask, “How can I protect myself in the event of a ________________?” We have the answer.

Joanna Drysdale- Manager, Underwriting Services

In our field, insurance isn’t just about protecting yourself against financial loss or covering your contractual obligations. It’s also about showing your employees that they’re valuable to you. Hanging on to a great bunch of crew season after season is worth so much more than the savings you make by skimping on crew benefits.

JW Haagensen- Account Executive, Inside Sales

Disclose all current and past medical conditions when applying for insurance. Insurance enrollment forms are a contract and if you fail to reveal a portion of your medical history or provide incomplete information, the insurance company could cancel your policy. No matter how minor it may seem, it’s important to advise your entire medical history and keep a file.

Steve Jackson- Consultant, Yacht Division

Find an insurance broker who really knows their field. Having an understanding of the real life of a captain and his crew as well as the technical knowledge of the insurance industry is invaluable.

Clayton Swart- Manager, Business Development

Whether you’re purchasing group insurance for your employees, insurance for your business or an individual plan for you and your family, it’s important to understand your policy. I know that insurance documents can be boring, but it’s really important that you read through them to make sure you understand the benefits and limitations of the plan. If you find anything confusing, it’s better to address those points before you need to use the plan.

MHG is here to help and provide assistance with all of your insurance needs. Whether you are looking for marine crew insurance, health insurance, life insurance, travel insurance, expatriate insurance or insurance for your business, we have the experience and knowledge to help you find the right policy. Please contact us at +1 954-828-1819 or +44 (0) 1624 678668 or visit us online at mhginsurance.com. If You Could Give One Piece of Advice to Your Clients, What Would It Be?

Time to get healthyThere’s never a bad time to make the decision and commitment to live a healthier lifestyle. We all know that the most popular time to start working out and eating better is at the start of the New Year. Probably because people feel that they need to make drastic changes because this is a new year, or want to lose that holiday weight. Gyms are crowded, carbs are being cut, and many are cooking at home rather than eating out. However, there are countless reasons getting healthy should be the number one priority on your list, and it has a lot more to do with than just losing weight and starting to work on your summer body. Here are just a few that may inspire you to start living healthy today!

More Productive

Many people don’t exercise or stay active because they have an excuse. Many times that excuse is, “I don’t have enough time.” Which is ironic, because people who do make time to work out every day, whether it be getting up earlier or staying up later, actually get more done in a day than people who don’t. Usually in less time too. Especially those that choose to work out or go for a run in the morning before going to work. It’s a bit ironic considering that exercising can make you tired, but if done correctly, it can get the blood pumping and the mind working and get you ready to perform at your best.

More Energy at Work

One of the reasons people who live healthier are more productive is because they have much more energy. Most of us arrive at work still trying to wake up, needing to get into our zone in order to get some work done. Yet those that live healthy lifestyles tend to not go through that. They arrive at work ready to go, and when 2:00 pm comes around, they are still kicking. There are certain foods that you can eat and avoid as well to make sure you have the energy you need. Eating fruits and vegetables is a natural way to feel energized. If you’ve noticed, anytime you load up on bread and other carbs, or eat a very big meal, you may tend to feel a little drowsy.

Nip it in the Bud

Living a healthy lifestyle goes beyond eating right and exercising, you also need to go to the doctor and have your yearly check-ups. By doing so, you may catch an issue and be able to do something about it before it is too late. Also, your doctor may be able to suggest something for you to change in your lifestyle that can aide you, such as vitamins, supplements, exercises, and nutritional advice. For instance, if you have changed your diet, you may be losing weight and feeling better, but also may be depriving your body of certain vitamins or minerals. A doctor will be able to tell you to keep up the good work, or recommend something to help!

You will be Glad You Did

The most important reason for you to start living a healthy right now is simple, why not? It is never a bad time to take control of your life and make the changes necessary to ensure that it’s as long and fulfilling as possible. Also, if you start now, in no time will you begin to feel better, and pretty soon, you won’t even remember how you felt before you started. If you have excuses or are waiting until next Monday every week, just remember this, the sooner you start, the sooner you reach your goal!

Your health and wellness is a priority. MHG Insurance Brokers is committed to serving all of our clients and making sure you have the coverage necessary for you to live a healthy life. We have the experience to assist and advise you on what insurance would be the best for you. If you are interested in Health Insurance, or would like more information, contact us at +1 954 828 1819 or +44 (0) 1624 678668 or visit mhginsurance.com.

Why “Now” is the Best Time to Get Healthy

Smile, it’s the Holidays!

Smile Everyone wants to look their best in their holiday photos, but one thing that many people overlook is their teeth. Proper dental care has been shown to not only improve your smile, but it also has been linked to better overall health. If your insurance plan includes dental coverage, why not take advantage of it and take care of those pearly whites? Normally, dental insurance will include a cleaning 2 times per year, as well as basic x-rays and exams at no cost to you.  If the dentist finds cavities or other issues that need to be fixed, typically insurance will pay 50% or even 80% of the cost depending on what treatment you need. There is a limit on benefits every year, so it is important to read your plan carefully. In the meantime, here are 5 key benefits to taking care of your teeth, which hopefully will motivate you to get that perfect smile for 2015!

1. Boosts Your Self-esteem and Confidence

Decayed teeth and gum disease are often associated not only with an unsightly mouth, but very bad breath. Bad breathe can affect your confidence, self-image, and self-esteem. With a healthy mouth, that's free of gum disease and cavities, your quality of life is also bound to be better.

2. May Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Chronic inflammation from gum disease has been associated with the development of cardiovascular problems such as heart disease, blockages of blood vessels, and strokes. Experts stop short of saying there is a cause-and-effect between gum disease and these other serious health problems, but the link has shown up in numerous studies.

3. Preserves Your Memory

Adults with gingivitis (swollen, bleeding gums) performed worse on tests of memory and other cognitive skills than those with healthier gums and mouths, according to a report in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry. Using an antibacterial mouthwash or toothpaste can help reduce bacteria in the mouth that can cause gingivitis.

4. Reduces Risks of Infection and Inflammation in Your Body

Poor oral health has been linked with the development of infection in other parts of the body. Research has found an association between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the joints. Experts say the mechanism of the destruction of connective tissues in both gum disease and RA is similar. Eating a balanced diet, seeing your dentist regularly, and good oral hygiene helps reduce your risks of tooth decay and gum disease.

5. Helps Keep Blood Sugar Stable, especially if you have diabetes

People with uncontrolled diabetes often have gum disease. Having diabetes can make you less able to fight off infection, including gum infections that can lead to serious gum disease. And some experts have found that if you have diabetes, you are more likely to develop severe gum problems than someone without diabetes, which may make it more difficult to control blood sugar levels. Reducing your risk of gingivitis by protecting your oral health may help with blood sugar control.

ACA Open Enrollment Deadlines

It is the goal of MHG Insurance Brokers to regularly inform and keep clients up to speed regarding the latest news and information associated with the ACA (Affordable Care Act). The ACA is now in effect for 2014, and its core goals are to provide Americans with improved quality health care, health plans that are more affordable, and access to comprehensive health coverage to those who would have previously been denied coverage before the act was put into place.

The ACA provides consumers with a choice – something that didn’t exist in the world of healthcare in the United States until now. Whether you were deemed ‘uninsurable’ do to preexisting health conditions, or were simply stuck paying inflated premiums with no other alternatives available to your family, all of that has changed now - you, the consumer, are in the driver’s seat. MHG Insurance Brokers wants to help you take control of your health. There has been quite a bit of chatter in the media about enrollment deadlines and penalties for not having health insurance. MHG Insurance Brokers would like to share the following current and accurate information regarding the open enrollment period with you:

  • Open enrollment for ACA health coverage runs through March 31, 2014.
  • The deadline to enroll is the 15th of each month, in order for coverage to become effective on the 1st day of the following month. For example, if you enroll for coverage by January 15th, your coverage will begin on February 1st. If you enroll by February 15th, your coverage will start March 1st.
  • Those who enroll by March 31st, but not by March 15th , will have an effective coverage date of May 1st.
  • During this open enrollment period, you may also make changes to your existing plan if you don’t find it to be adequate or are not satisfied with it.
  • Penalties for exceeding 3 consecutive months without health coverage have been waived by the Administration, but only during this open enrollment period.
  • After the open enrollment period has ended, changes cannot be made to existing plans until the next open enrollment period begins, unless there is a life changing event, such as a marriage, divorce, loss of employment, birth or adoption of a child.
MHG has extensive knowledge and expertise in health reform. We also have the experience and network of resources to provide you with the very best, solid, comprehensive health coverage available that suits your healthcare needs and works with your budget. What You Should know about Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment Deadlines

Plans On and Off Exchange

If you are currently in the market to purchase health insurance coverage, MHG Insurance Brokers would like to share some information regarding the healthcare plans that are available both ‘on’ and ‘off’ the exchange which could benefit you. The health insurance exchange is an online marketplace for Americans seeking health coverage that allows them to comparison-shop the different plans that are being offered by competing health care providers. For Americans who previously could not afford health insurance, and yet were not eligible for programs like Medicaid or Medicare, may qualify for federal assistance by way of a tax credit, which will reduce the cost of their monthly premium. This subsidy is only available when selecting a health plan on the exchange.

Plans offered both on and off the exchange provide the same mandatory essential benefits, however, many plans offered off the exchange provide more comprehensive coverage and have larger provider networks than many of the new 2014 plans offered on the exchange. Plans offered off the exchange are still government approved. MHG Insurance Brokers can assist you with determining whether you qualify for a federal subsidy based on your income, as well as evaluating the benefits and provider networks included in each of the plans that you are interested in, whether they are on or off the exchange. Here are just some of the mandatory essential benefits that are offered through the plans available both on and off the marketplace:

  • Outpatient doctor visits, including preventative and wellness services
  • Pediatric services including dental and vision
  • Emergency room services
  • Hospitalization
  • Maternity and newborn care
  • Mental health services
  • Substance Use Disorder coverage
  • Prescription Drug coverage
  • Rehabilitative services
  • Lab tests and services
The Affordable Care Act has made way for many improvements to healthcare for Americans. New plans and many older plans will now provide subscribers with these key enhancements, in addition to others that aren’t mentioned on this list:

  • Advances in women’s health services
  • Improved care for seniors
  • New preventative services that require no out of pocket costs.
  • No annual or lifetime limits on healthcare.
MHG Insurance Brokers is here to guide you each step of the way during these changing times.  MHG Insurance Brokers will assist you with comparing plan choices that are available both on and off the exchange, and help you obtain the health care coverage that is best suited to your family’s health needs and budget. We will utilize our knowledge and expertise to determine whether it is more advantageous to you to shop for a plan on or off the exchange, and clarify the details regarding the benefits, rights and protections included in the new plans.
